More Than Meets the Ear

More Than Meets the Ear

I recognize that music, like beauty, is in the eyes, or in this case, ears of the beholder. What is fantastic and transcendent to one is possibly cacophonous and repelling to another. That's okay and I am cool with that. But what makes for one’s own winning mix of musical ingredients, I think, is fun to discover. Not what artist do you like. Not exactly. More specifically, what about an artist’s music resonates and keeps you coming back for more, more, more. For me, I can share a few things that matter: lyrics with more than one meaning; layers of sound filling the sonic landscape in curious, ambiguous, and compelling ways; syncopated or polyrhythmic beats are just a few common ingredients that when mixed together create a likely recipe that captures my sonic imagination. This week’s show will feature a set or more of works by artists that provide, for me at least, some of these magical ingredients and more. From Wilco to Waits, from ambient to bop, and more. Lend an open ear and listen live on Tuesday at 9AM, if you can. Also, don't forget that you can listen to all of the music from last week's “Broken Compass” show right from the comfort of your browser (click here). Thanks for listening! (This week's show artwork, “one small step for the eyes” is by yours truly.)
